About us

As a Senior Engineer (m/f/d)* for Optical Design at SCHOTT, you will develop the next generation of Augmented Reality (AR) systems. You will be part of a dynamic and global team that transforms innovative concepts into products through optical and mechanical design, simulation techniques, and iterative prototypes. We are looking for individuals who excel in teamwork, generate bold ideas, explore new technological areas, and drive concepts from prototypes to mass production.
We are seeking a candidate with a product-oriented mindset to join our Augmented Reality Waveguide Design Team. You will be responsible for leading projects to develop new AR waveguides or waveguide components, proposing new optical designs, and optimizing them based on measurement and simulation data. Additionally, you will analyze quality data from production and development lines, identify trends, correlate quality control data, and improve line stability and product quality.
This technical leadership role requires close collaboration with optics, process, reliability, and materials science engineers, as well as project managers and production operation teams, to oversee designs, processes, and tools from the concept phase to mass production. Our fast-paced environment is driven by highly motivated colleagues. The ideal candidate (m/f/d)* will continuously expand their knowledge and expertise in new AR display technologies, optical design, simulation, and manufacturability.

Your Contribution

  • Designing waveguides and waveguide components from the concept phase to series production, collaborating with internal and external cross-functional partners to meet optical requirements
  • Proposing prototypes of waveguides or intermediate components and designing experiments (DOEs) to evaluate design or process concepts
  • Designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments to inform design decisions and process development
  • Leading development projects for new product developments or product and process improvements, as well as supporting and leading process validation studies and proof-of-concept waveguides
  • Evaluating and optimizing current components based on measurement and simulation data
  • Conducting optical sensitivity and tolerance analyses of product designs based on simulation and manufacturing data
  • Analyzing quality data from production and development lines, identifying trends, and correlating OQC with IPQC to improve line stability and product quality
  • Deriving optical/functional product specifications in collaboration with internal and external customers.

Your Profile

  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering (preferably with a PhD) or equivalent experience
  • Experienced optical engineer or optical designer with knowledge of optical simulation tools such as ZEMAX OpticStudio or LightTools
  • Knowledge in image processing and optical display metrics such as MTF, contrast, luminance, color, etc.
  • Proficiency in data processing with Python, etc.
  • Experience in optical Monte Carlo tolerance analysis and sensitivity studies
  • You're familiar with the manufacturing of optical components and statistical process control
  • Ideally, experience in 3D mechanical engineering and geometric tolerancing (CAD)
  • Ideally, experience with optical metrology.

Your Benefits

SCHOTT's openness to promote your further development is just as great as our additional benefits. Ranging from active health management via flexible working hours and hybrid work all the way to corporate pension plans: everything geared to suit your goals and needs.
